Tia and Mahmoud’s wedding took place on the 1st August, on one of the warmest days of the summer, with their day unfolding across Richmond in South West London.
From wedding morning preparations in two Richmond hotels, to a white London taxi carrying the bridal party through the city, followed by an outdoor ceremony overlooking Richmond Park, it was such a beautiful example of how varied a London wedding can feel.
As a UK & London wedding photographer, this is exactly what I love about photographing weddings in the city. London gives you so much variety within a single wedding day. Elegant hotels, recognisable city details and busy streets can sit alongside huge stretches of greenery, historic buildings and outdoor celebrations.
Wedding Morning in Richmond, London
Mahmoud began the morning at The Petersham Hotel in Richmond, while Tia got ready with her bridal party at Richmond Hill Hotel.
Having both sides of the wedding morning based in Richmond gave us such a lovely sense of place from the beginning of the day.
Once everyone was ready, Tia and her bridal party travelled to the ceremony in a classic white London taxi. It was such a simple detail, but one that made the photographs unmistakably London.
For couples planning a London wedding, I always think those small location-specific details are worth embracing. You don’t necessarily need photographs in front of every famous landmark for your gallery to feel connected to the city.
An Incredibly Special Ceremony
There was also a much more personal reason why this ceremony meant so much to Tia and her family.
Her dad has terminal cancer, and in the weeks leading up to the wedding there had been uncertainty over whether he would be able to attend.
Just a few days before the wedding, he surprised Tia at Heathrow Airport.
He was able to be there on the wedding day and walk her down the aisle.
It was one of the most emotional parts of the day, and one of those moments where documentary wedding photography matters most. Nothing needed directing or recreating. It was simply about being there and preserving it as it happened.
An Outdoor London Wedding
Tia and Mahmoud’s ceremony was held outside, overlooking the greenery of Richmond Park.
It was a properly hot London summer afternoon, with guests holding fans throughout the ceremony and everyone making the most of the sunshine.
One of the things I love about weddings in Richmond is how far removed it can feel from central London, despite still being very much part of the city.
For couples who want a London wedding but don’t necessarily want a traditional city-centre feel, areas like Richmond offer that brilliant combination of London character and open space.
After the ceremony, the day moved into the drinks reception before we spent a little time exploring the surrounding park for portraits.
My approach to wedding photography is always to keep this part of the day fairly relaxed. I want couples to have photographs that feel considered and beautiful, while still spending the majority of their wedding with their guests.
A Summer Evening in London
As the heat began to soften, everyone moved into the evening reception.
After such an emotional ceremony, the rest of the day felt incredibly celebratory. Friends and family came together for dinner, speeches and the evening party, finishing a wedding day that had been filled with so much meaning.
Tia and Mahmoud’s wedding was also such a lovely reminder that there is no single look for a London wedding.
It can be grand and architectural. It can be modern and fashion-led. It can involve black cabs and city streets, or it can take place surrounded by trees and parkland.
That variety is exactly why I would love to photograph more weddings across London.
